Newcastle have signed Sweden international striker Alexander Isak on a six year deal from Real Sociedad for a club record fee of about £60m. Newcastle’s previous transfer record is the £40m they paid for Joelinton signed from German club Hoffenheim in 2019. The club also paid £35m for Bruno Guimaraes last January.

Newcastle have already signed Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Nick Pope this summer and could bring the total fees spent in the transfer market since the new owners took over the club in October 2021 to around £200m.

Isak, who once played for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, has made 132 appearances for Sociedad scoring 44 goals. He has also scored nine goals in 37 international appearances for his country.

On Friday, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe had said he was hopeful the deal would be completed in time for Isak to face Wolves on Sunday. Isak’s arrival would boost Newcastle’s attacking options given the injury record of Callum Wilson, who is presently awaiting results of a hamstring scan.
