Following Jürgen Klopp’s description of his side’s start to the season as a “false start” with two draws and a loss in the first three games, Liverpool equalled the biggest victory in Premier League history as their season kicked-started in spectacular fashion in a 9-0 annihilation of newly promoted Bournemouth at Anfield.
Roberto Firmino was the star performer with his brace and hat trick of assists, a return that would leave Mo Salah green with envy as he could not trouble the scoresheet. Luis Diaz also chipped in a brace with Fabio Carvalho, Harvey Elliot, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk also getting on in the action.
This rout was newly-promoted Bournemouth’s third consecutive defeat in the league without scoring a goal after their victory over Aston Villa in their opening game.
Manchester United have achieved this margin of victory twice – against Ipswich in 1995 and Southampton in 2021 – while Leicester City did likewise against the Saints in 2019.
