The former world number one Andy Murray defeated Argentina’s Cerundolo to kickstart the 10th anniversary of his US Open title win.

Britain’s Andy Murray demonstrated his grit and guile to frustrate Argentine 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo with a first-round win.

Murray pushed hard to edge a tight first set and then pull clean through in the second as Cerundolo became frustrated.

The former world number one, who earned the first of his three major titles in New York, went on to win 7-5 6-3 6-3.

The Briton will now face the winner of the tie between Australia’s John Millman and American Emilio Nava next.
