Arsenal maintained their 100% start to the Premier League season with a narrow 2-1 with over Aston Villa. This win means that the Gunners will still top the league table after the fifth round of games.

The result is likely to heap more pressure on Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard who has seen his side lose four of their first five fixtures.

Gabriel Jesus scored his third goal of the season by sweeping a low effort past Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after the former Arsenal shotstopper had fumbled Granit Xhaka’s deflected shot.

Aston Villa might have improved after the break, even finding an equaliser directly from Douglas Luiz’s corner – a controversial moment which had  Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale protesting that he was impeded by Boubacar Kamara – but they were only level terms for less than three minutes as Gabriel Martinelli turned in an accurate cross from Bukayo Saka.

Mikel Arteta’s side carried the greater threat throughout.

This result means Arsenal have won their opening five league matches for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign, when they went on to finish second.
