A Brais Mendez penalty just before the hour mark consigned Manchester United to a home defeat in their first game of this season’s Europa League group stage campaign.
The only goal of the game came after 59 minutes following a controversial handball decision against Lisandro Martinez who had come on at halftime for Portuguese rightback Diogo Dalot.
The game kicked off after consultation with the Football Association and UEFA following the passing on of Queen Elizabeth II with no music played in the stadium around the match and both sides wearing black armbands and perfectly observing a minute’s silence as a mark of respect.
Manchester United play their second group game against Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova on Thursday, 15 September.
