21-year-old World number one Iga Swiatek capped a dominant season by defeating Tunisian fifth seed Ons Jabeur at the Flushing Meadows to win the US Open. This win in New York is her second major title of 2022 and her very first US Open championship win.

Swiatek won 6-2 7-6 (7-5) to secure the season’s final Grand Slam trophy on the hard courts.

Swiatek’s previous two wins both came on the clay at the French Open.

28-year-old Jabeur also lost in the Wimbledon final in July and will have to continue her wait for one of tennis’ four most prestigious titles. Jabeur moved up to a joint career-high ranking of second after reaching the final but it was Swiatek who demonstrated why there is such a big gap between her and the rest of the pack with a largely dominant performance at the Flushing Meadows final which was a meeting between the two leading players on the WTA Tour this year.

Poland’s Swiatek remains the world number one, and would have maintained rank even if she had lost.
