Marcus Rashford continued in his blistering form as Manchester United grabbed a 3-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup third round on Friday.
The England international went on a mazy run into the opposition box very early in the game before sending a slide rule pass across Jordan Pickford’s goalmouth to the far post where Antony poked home from very close range. He made a similar run in the second half which ended up with Conor Coady – who had equalised for the Toffees in the 14th minute after a rare David De Gea error – scoring an own goal to put United back in the lead.
After substitute Alejandro Garnacho was fouled by Ben Godfrey, Rashford stepped up and sent international teammate Pickford the wrong way with the ball nestling safely in the back of the net. The goal means the academy graduate has now scored in his fifth successive United appearance.
Manchester United now have 10 wins out of 11 matches across all competitions, a run that includes 8 consecutive victories at the Old Trafford.
An ankle injury suffered by Everton’s Alex Iwobi after a tackle by Tyrell Malacia was a major talking point of a fixture in which VAR was put to use. Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had restored parity for Lampard’s side but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Everton fans made their feelings known all through the game with banners being unfurled and placards visible at major sections of the stands.
