Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has had charges of attempted rape and assault against him dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2022 amid allegations surrounding images and videos posted online by Harriet Robson.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In a statement posted on social media, Greenwood said he was relieved the whole ordeal was over and thanked his family and friends for supporting him.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

A Manchester United representative said the club had noted the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The Old Trafford club will conduct an investigation into the matter and hope to find the best possible outcome at the end of the process.

Greenwood will not return to training or play until this process is complete.

Greater Manchester Police said it was only fair to announce Greenwood would no longer face criminal proceedings.
