The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers first leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Mama Samba Balde put the visitors in the lead in the 29th minute and the Djurtus looked the more likely to score more in the encounter.

The Super Eagles, who have now lost in five consecutive games, managed just two shots – not off target – and barely troubled the opposition defence despite parading some of the hottest talents in European club football this season.

The loss means José Peseiro’s side have tumbled into second on the table with Guinea-Bissau now sitting atop the Eagles.

Nigeria, who would have been in the driving seat for qualification in the group, will now hope to defeat the Djurtus at their home to keep qualification hopes alive.

The second leg holds on Monday, 27 March.
