Thomas Tuchel’s reign at Bayern Munich started with a Der Klassiker win over his old club Borussia Dortmund that took them to the top of the Bundesliga.

Dayot Upamecano’s freak goal after a misskick from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saw the ball roll into the net off a long pass opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Thomas Muller doubled the lead five minutes later.

Thomas Muller then grabbed his brace in the 23rd minute by sending home a rebound after Sane’s shot was saved.

French forward Kingsley Coman then netted the Bavarians’ fourth in the 50th minute for Bayern’s 40th Bundesliga goal against Dortmund in the past six seasons.

Dortmund tried to rally a comeback as Emre Can scored a penalty after Jude Bellingham was fouled and Donyell Malen added a late second but Bayern could have won by more with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry having efforts ruled out for offside.

Only three players have ever scored more than Thomas Muller’s seven Der Klassiker goals in the history of the derby.

This win takes Bayern back above Dortmund, two points clear at the top, as they seek a record-extending 11th Bundesliga title in a row.

The result ended Dortmund’s unbeaten run of 10 Bundesliga games in 2023.
