A suspected truck hijacker has jumped to his death along Lagos-Ibadan expressway in a bid to escape from operatives of the Ogun State Police Command.
The suspected hijacker was said to have noticed the policemen trailing him and his accomplice while driving the truck.
He was reported to have left the steering, jumped out on motion but fell, hitting his head against the tarred road.
Ogun Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the robber “died on the spot.”
Oyeyemi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said the suspect’s accomplice, Akeem Adeleke was subsequently arrested on Tuesday and taken to Ewu-Oliwo divisional headquarters.
He noted that the deceased and Akeem Adeleke hijacked at gun point a truck loaded with industrial raw material along Lagos-Ibadan expressway after shoving the driver out of it.
The, he explained, victim alerted the Federal Highway Patrol team stationed along the expressway that while driving his truck towards Ibadan, the suspects suddenly jumped into the truck and pushed him out, took over and drove it towards the direction of Lagos.
The patrol team, he added, trailed and sighted the truck somewhere along the road but as the suspects tried to escape, one of them jumped to his death.
According to Oyeyemi, the DPO Ewu-Oliwo division, CSP Toyosi Bello accompanied the patrol team to the scene where the corpse of the dead robber was recovered to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue.
He listed one locally made pistol, three live cartridges, two itel phones and some charms as items recovered from the suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Frank Mba, has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for discreet investigation.
