Referee Michael Salisbury, the VAR official in charge of Brighton’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, has been dropped for the next round of Premier League fixtures.
Salisbury, who has officiated 248 games in his career – including 16 Premier League fixtures, failed to intervene and award a second-half penalty to the Seagulls after Kaoru Mitoma was fouled in Tottenham’s penalty area.
Refereeing body PGMOL has since admitted an error was made and apologised to the Seagulls for not giving the spot-kick.
The match’s on-pitch referee Stuart Attwell, who did not react to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s tackle on Kaoru Mitoma inside the Spurs’ box, will be the VAR official for Wolves’ home game with Brentford on Saturday.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb has made contact with senior Brighton officials to acknowledge the mistake – the third time this season.
If Brighton had won the game, they would have been in sixth place just a point behind fifth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand.
Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, who was sent off alongside Spurs’ Stellini for a touchine incident, in his post-match interview said it was clear his side should have been awarded a penalty.
Brighton has asked for clarification of a number of decisions including a further penalty claim when Lewis Dunk’s shirt was pulled in the box as well as two other goals disallowed for handball.
Brighton travel to play Chelsea next at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
