A former governor of Akwa Ibom State and a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, has emerged as the Senate President of the 10th Assembly.

Akpabio was the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk of the National Assembly, declared Akpabio as the Senate President having garnered 63 votes leaving his rival with 46 votes.

Senator Jilbrin Barau was also elected Deputy Senate President unopposed.

Senator Dave Umahi nominated him while Senator Saliu Mustapha seconded the motion.
There was no counter-nomination, making the Clerk to the National Assembly Sani Tambuwal declare him elected unopposed.
