Environmental cleanliness begins with an individual’s desire to be clean. We have the grace and strength to work towards clearing our cities of any dirt. The time to clean our city of any dirt begins with individual action for collective clean communities. This citation aligns with the nature of the progression in environmental sanitation in Lagos State through the efforts of the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Honourable Tokunbo Wahab.

Since assuming office, he has been working hard to ensure that shorelines and waterways in Lagos State are free of waste and to prevent the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by members of the public.

Tokunbo Wahab understands the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders in the state to promote a cleaner and healthier environment. He has been engaging critical stakeholders in Lagos State, with plans in place for environmental sustainability that will make the state a haven of environmental purity.

According to him, “2023 was an eventful year with respect to the environment and waste management. The Lagos State Government was able to do a reset, including clearing illegal dump sites, banning street trade, ensuring that waterways in the state were cleaner for safe water transportation, and closing unsanitary markets—a collaborative effort with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).”

As this was an avenue to reawaken the residents to a positive mindset towards their immediate environment, Tokunbo Wahab reiterated his commitment to ensuring that noise pollution becomes a thing of the past in Lagos State.

Through his efforts towards waste sustainability, his ministry has not ceased to campaign for responsible waste disposal, a habit for a healthier living and working environment in the state. The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State has made it a priority for Lagosians to embrace the use of covered waste bins as a crucial step towards safeguarding health and the environment.

These steps will fight the spread of any bacteria, as the container or the bin will contain odors from the waste, prevent pests, and reduce the risk of contamination. Covered bins contribute to a cleaner, safer space for all within our environment, says Honourable Tokunbo Wahab.
