President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolence to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials.

The crash happened on Sunday, May 19, while they were returning from a dam opening ceremony near the Azerbaijan border amidst heavy fog.

The crash resulted in the deaths of eight people.

In a statement by his special adviser on media & publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday, May 20, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing President Raisi as a dedicated leader committed to Iran’s development.

The statement reads: “President Bola Tinubu extends his condolences to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran over the passing of President Ebrahim Raisi; Iranian foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials in a helicopter crash.

“President Tinubu expresses profound grief over this disturbing tragedy and describes President Raisi as a leader who was passionately committed to the development of Iran.

“While commiserating with the bereaved families, President Tinubu prays for the continuous peace, stability, and prosperity of the Iranian nation.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, the President assures the Islamic Republic of Nigeria’s support and prayers in this moment of grief.”
