German keeper Loris Karius has joined Premier League club Newcastle United as a free agent on an initial contract until January.

The 29-year-old became a free agent after leaving Liverpool in the summer and there is an option to extend the deal until the end of the season.

Karius joins the Magpies after back-up goalkeeper Karl Darlow suffered an ankle injury.

Newcastle lost shotstopper Martin Dubravka during the summer to Manchester United on a season-long loan after Nick Pope joined from Burnley.

Karius played for Liverpool in their 2018 Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid where it later emerged he had suffered a concussion.

He then had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin before his Reds exit.
