Former Belgian national team manager Roberto Martinez is set to become the new manager of the Portuguese national team.

The Spaniard was in talks to replace Santos as Fernando, who stepped down as coach after Portugal lost to Morocco in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Martinez had also resigned from his role in Belgium after the team was eliminated in the group stage in Qatar.

The former Everton and Wigan manager was appointed in 2016 and had his contract expired after a dismal World Cup outing.

In Russia 2018, his Belhium team finished third after entering the tournament as the second-best team in the world rankings.
