In one of the biggest FA Cup shocks of recent times, League Two side Stevenage produced an incredible late comeback to beat Aston Villa on Sunday, stunning their hosts with two goals in the final two minutes to reach the fourth round.
Eight Premier League clubs have already been knocked out of this year’s third round and one more top-flight elimination is certain when Liverpool and Wolves meet for their replay. A record-equalling number of Premier League clubs, since the league’s inception in 1992, are now guaranteed to suffer early elimination in this season’s competition. That ensures the most top division teams bowing out at the first hurdle since 2007-08 – the only other season to feature as many as nine sides fall since 1992.
The 2007-08 season was also, incidentally, the last in which a side from outside the Premier League reached the FA Cup final.
The fourth round will take place from 27 to 30 January after the draws were made on Sunday.
Manchester City will now host either Arsenal or Oxford United in the FA Cup fourth round after they beat Chelsea 4-0.
Reading manager Paul Ince will return to Old Trafford to face former club Manchester United.
Brighton will host either Liverpool or Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Preston North End will welcome Tottenham Hotspur and National League side Wrexham will take on Sheffield United.
The draw in full:
Preston North End v Tottenham
Southampton v Blackpool
Wrexham v Sheffield United
Ipswich Town v Burnley
