Southampton ran a huge upset in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals by beating Manchester City with two unreplied goals at the Saint Mary’s stadium.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who rested key players such as Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne with this weekend’s derby with Manchester United at Old Trafford in mind, was left scartching his head at his team’s performance against a vibrant Southampton display.

The game was settled in the first half when Sekou Mara’s swept home a crisp finish beyond the Citeh goalie after 23 minutes before a superb long-range curler from Moussa Djenepo five minutes later caught City keeper Stefan Ortega badly out of position with the ball nestling in the back of the net as rapturous joy overwhelmed the home fans.

Manchester City brought in the big boys for the sec in half but still ended the game with no shot on target against Nathan Jones’ side.

Southampton will now battle Newcastle United in the semifinals with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest slugging it out in the other semifinal bout later this month.
